Transitioning From School to Summer…For Moms!

If you’re a mom, chances are your life is a little hectic right now. The transition from school to summer can be a tricky one as your kids wind down their school year. Some may have ended school already, some have finals, half days, graduation parties and some are counting down the days until they leave for camp, head to the beach or just hang out with friends and relax at home. What does that mean for moms?

It means that you may need to be very creative in how you schedule your time during this transition. See, here’s where many moms give up their exercise or healthy eating because they may be even busier than usual with their kids. What does this lead to?

Mom becoming unfit, overweight, overwhelmed and unhappy! I’ve often seen this scenario play out with the moms I’ve coached for nearly 20 years. It starts with being over-committed and needing some extra time to get things done. Where can that time be found? Some moms find that time by giving up their exercise. Others find that time by giving up healthy eating and grabbing unhealthy food on the run , eating leftovers off their kids plates or snacking as they’re getting their kids ready to go from one activity to the next.

Some moms give up things they were doing to de-stress like seeing friends, doing yoga, meditation, journaling or simply reading a magazine. They begin to feel frustrated, resentful, start feeling unhealthy, sluggish and unhappy. They need a quick, simple way to self soothe so many moms find temporary relief by binge eating or mindlessly munching.

Not only does this unconscious self soothing technique lead to more stress and frustration, but it is also one of the most common reasons why you may begin to gain weight right now…if you don’t have a plan.

You know that I’m always talking about how everything begins with awareness and then a plan. What’s yours?

The better you are, the better you are for all within your care and reach. Imagine building a home. It begins with a strong and solid foundation. If the foundation is weak or cracked, the home will never be sturdy and secure. Well, you’re the foundation! When you’re physically fit, emotionally strong, fulfilled and happy everything works better and runs more smoothly. Keeping that in mind, please make the time to continue (or begin) whatever you need to in order to feel good. It doesn’t have to be a lot but it has to be enough to show yourself some self love and compassion. Simple things you can do now not only benefit you, but will impact and benefit everyone else too.

What’s your plan? I’d love to hear it!

Something to Consider this Mother’s Day…and Every Other Day Too!

Any plans for Mother’s Day? Whether you’re a mom or there’s a mom in your life, make sure to celebrate!

As moms, we’re so busy taking care of everyone else that we sometimes need to be reminded to take care of ourselves too. But for many moms, by the time everyone else’s needs are met, we don’t have the time, strength, motivation or energy left for any self-care. So where does that leave us? Unfit, overweight, overwhelmed and unhappy! Here’s how it works…

Face it; you probably have way too much to take care of. There are about 1,000 tasks, chores, errands and responsibilities to tackle throughout any given day.

How can you possibly get it all done? The only way is by cutting some corners and instead of our overwhelm impacting anyone else, we may find some extra time by:

giving up our workouts

grabbing something to eat while cooking for others instead of sitting down to a meal

saving a few minutes by not doing our makeup, hair, nails, etc.

wearing the same old clothes because we haven’t taken the time to get new ones

giving up time to read a book, take a bath, journal, etc. so we can straighten up the house, fold the
laundry or do the dishes

telling our friends we can’t meet them for lunch because we have errands to take care of

the list goes on and on…

So we do this for a while, maybe years, even decades. We look in the mirror and see the result of our “selflessness” and find that we’ve been loving everyone else but ourselves. We see a tired face, an unfit body and a “thrown together” look. We shake our heads in disgust and walk away. The results of our current lifestyle, choices and habits are less than glamorous. Here’s where the anger, frustration and shame starts to kick in…but it doesn’t have to!

The first step to changing ANYTHING that doesn’t work is to first become aware of it. Have you become aware of something that isn’t working for you? GREAT! Now you need to figure out what you’re missing whether it’s eating better, getting back into fitness, getting more sleep, spending time with friends, reading a magazine, etc.

Once you’ve figured that out, carve out some time and get started! It doesn’t need to be anything major, anything drastic is only temporary at best. Slow, steady steps in the right direction is the only way to achieve lasting results. Now, here’s where some moms get tripped up and think…”But I don’t have time for those things.” Is there no time because you don’t want to ask for help, feel no one can do a task as well as you, find it difficult to let go of something or believe you’ll seem inadequate if you delegate some tasks? Here’s what I say…”Please hang up the cape SuperMom!”

I’m sure you’re extremely capable of doing it all but from personal experience (if you don’t know my story I tell it in my book The Lifestyle Fitness Program) that mindset only led to a complete deterioration of my health, wellness and happiness. It led to so many symptoms, illnesses, conditions and even disease. It was only when I hit rock bottom and was willing to acknowledge the damage my lifestyle was creating that I took back the reigns and made the necessary changes to regain my health, fitness, wellness and happiness. You can too!

So, here’s my Mother’s Day gift to you. You’re amazing, incredible, capable and have all the tools you need to make the changes to your lifestyle to make it work better. You don’t need to make excuses, justify or rationalize why you want a little time for you. You deserve to feel good-not because you’ve proven anything to anyone but simply because you exist!

Give yourself permission to take better care of yourself-not just on Mother’s Day but every day. It’s not indulgent, it’s crucial to your wellness and will not only benefit you but will benefit all within your care. Will you make that over due hair appointment? Take a walk? Buy some beautiful ripe berries to enjoy? It’s so simple but so important. I’d love to hear your ideas, let me know what you’re planning to do. Comment and share!

We Are What We…

Many of us have heard the saying “we are what we eat. Basically this means that if our diets are made up of fast food, takeout, foods high in sugar, high in fat, if we drink too much or if we consider our children’s leftovers a decent meal, we can’t really be surprised if our body doesn’t look or feel it’s best. To sum it up; eat bad, look and feel bad. Well, not only are we what we eat, but we’re also what we feel, think, hear, see, do and believe. Here’s how.

Let’s start with what you think. If you think you’re unlovable, unworthy or incapable, and these are the thoughts that play continuously in your mind, can you really be surprised if these thoughts encourage you act or carry yourself a certain way? Maybe they’ll prevent you from feeling deserving of a loving relationship, cause you to feel unworthy of something fabulous or incapable of achieving a goal or dream. If these or similar thoughts are playing in a negative tape loop you’ve created, take a look at how they’re showing themselves within your life.

Moving on to “we are what we feel.” If you feel overweight, unattractive or ill-equipped in some way, take a look at the way you dress, the way you carry yourself, what you do (or don’t do) and the relationships you have. Notice how these feelings show themselves in the clothes you choose, the opportunities you may be avoiding and what you’re willing to tolerate in a coworker, friend or partner. Now identify how different things would be if you didn’t feel this way about yourself.

“We are what we hear.” Think about it, if you’re listening to people who are negative, critical, pessimistic and judgmental, can you be surprised when you feel deflated, depleted and uninspired? Of course you’re trying to be a good listener, you may even be the “go to person” when someone wants to gossip, needs to vent or complain. Notice however, how you feel once this negativity is dumped on you.

Let’s take a look at “we are what we see.” If you’re watching programs filled with misery, pain, violence or vulgarity, are you surprised if that has an affect on you? Take TV news for example. Sure you may be up to date on the latest tragedies in the areas of crime, the recession, drugs or disease but how do these visuals resonate with you? After seeing them do you feel calm, serene and comfortable or nervous, vulnerable and afraid?

Next, let’s look at “we are what we do.” If you’re doing little more than chores or tasks when you’re home, errands and an unfulfilling job when you’re out, can you be surprised if you’re not excited about your life? Think about it. Take a look at your typical day and see what it’s made of. If it’s crammed with tasks leaving no room for self care, healthy eating, exercise, down time and fun, can you see how this may be showing itself in how you look, feel and live?

Lastly, let’s look at “we are what we believe.” Our belief system is created by the repetition of an idea from someone we trust. For example, let’s say you were constantly told “you can be, do or have anything.” This was said to you enough times and it became your belief system as well. But, let’s say you were on the receiving end of someone with limited beliefs themselves. They may have told you that you were not meant to be wealthy, happy, thin, carefree, etc. They may have believed that “life is a struggle, everyone in our family has a fiery temper, is prone to heart disease, has these thighs,” etc. When this was said to you enough times, it became your belief system as well. Are you surprised then when you go into your adult life, carrying this belief system and living within these limits?

Not only are we what we eat, but we’re also what we think, feel, hear, see, do and believe. It’s all of these factors that contribute to who we are and how we live our lives as a result. The best part about it is that with awareness and a desire to change, whatever area doesn’t work well for you anymore can slowly and steadily be changed so that it does. The choice is ours.
