Transitioning From School to Summer…For Moms!

If you’re a mom, chances are your life is a little hectic right now. The transition from school to summer can be a tricky one as your kids wind down their school year. Some may have ended school already, some have finals, half days, graduation parties and some are counting down the days until they leave for camp, head to the beach or just hang out with friends and relax at home. What does that mean for moms?

It means that you may need to be very creative in how you schedule your time during this transition. See, here’s where many moms give up their exercise or healthy eating because they may be even busier than usual with their kids. What does this lead to?

Mom becoming unfit, overweight, overwhelmed and unhappy! I’ve often seen this scenario play out with the moms I’ve coached for nearly 20 years. It starts with being over-committed and needing some extra time to get things done. Where can that time be found? Some moms find that time by giving up their exercise. Others find that time by giving up healthy eating and grabbing unhealthy food on the run , eating leftovers off their kids plates or snacking as they’re getting their kids ready to go from one activity to the next.

Some moms give up things they were doing to de-stress like seeing friends, doing yoga, meditation, journaling or simply reading a magazine. They begin to feel frustrated, resentful, start feeling unhealthy, sluggish and unhappy. They need a quick, simple way to self soothe so many moms find temporary relief by binge eating or mindlessly munching.

Not only does this unconscious self soothing technique lead to more stress and frustration, but it is also one of the most common reasons why you may begin to gain weight right now…if you don’t have a plan.

You know that I’m always talking about how everything begins with awareness and then a plan. What’s yours?

The better you are, the better you are for all within your care and reach. Imagine building a home. It begins with a strong and solid foundation. If the foundation is weak or cracked, the home will never be sturdy and secure. Well, you’re the foundation! When you’re physically fit, emotionally strong, fulfilled and happy everything works better and runs more smoothly. Keeping that in mind, please make the time to continue (or begin) whatever you need to in order to feel good. It doesn’t have to be a lot but it has to be enough to show yourself some self love and compassion. Simple things you can do now not only benefit you, but will impact and benefit everyone else too.

What’s your plan? I’d love to hear it!

Something to Consider this Mother’s Day…and Every Other Day Too!

Any plans for Mother’s Day? Whether you’re a mom or there’s a mom in your life, make sure to celebrate!

As moms, we’re so busy taking care of everyone else that we sometimes need to be reminded to take care of ourselves too. But for many moms, by the time everyone else’s needs are met, we don’t have the time, strength, motivation or energy left for any self-care. So where does that leave us? Unfit, overweight, overwhelmed and unhappy! Here’s how it works…

Face it; you probably have way too much to take care of. There are about 1,000 tasks, chores, errands and responsibilities to tackle throughout any given day.

How can you possibly get it all done? The only way is by cutting some corners and instead of our overwhelm impacting anyone else, we may find some extra time by:

giving up our workouts

grabbing something to eat while cooking for others instead of sitting down to a meal

saving a few minutes by not doing our makeup, hair, nails, etc.

wearing the same old clothes because we haven’t taken the time to get new ones

giving up time to read a book, take a bath, journal, etc. so we can straighten up the house, fold the
laundry or do the dishes

telling our friends we can’t meet them for lunch because we have errands to take care of

the list goes on and on…

So we do this for a while, maybe years, even decades. We look in the mirror and see the result of our “selflessness” and find that we’ve been loving everyone else but ourselves. We see a tired face, an unfit body and a “thrown together” look. We shake our heads in disgust and walk away. The results of our current lifestyle, choices and habits are less than glamorous. Here’s where the anger, frustration and shame starts to kick in…but it doesn’t have to!

The first step to changing ANYTHING that doesn’t work is to first become aware of it. Have you become aware of something that isn’t working for you? GREAT! Now you need to figure out what you’re missing whether it’s eating better, getting back into fitness, getting more sleep, spending time with friends, reading a magazine, etc.

Once you’ve figured that out, carve out some time and get started! It doesn’t need to be anything major, anything drastic is only temporary at best. Slow, steady steps in the right direction is the only way to achieve lasting results. Now, here’s where some moms get tripped up and think…”But I don’t have time for those things.” Is there no time because you don’t want to ask for help, feel no one can do a task as well as you, find it difficult to let go of something or believe you’ll seem inadequate if you delegate some tasks? Here’s what I say…”Please hang up the cape SuperMom!”

I’m sure you’re extremely capable of doing it all but from personal experience (if you don’t know my story I tell it in my book The Lifestyle Fitness Program) that mindset only led to a complete deterioration of my health, wellness and happiness. It led to so many symptoms, illnesses, conditions and even disease. It was only when I hit rock bottom and was willing to acknowledge the damage my lifestyle was creating that I took back the reigns and made the necessary changes to regain my health, fitness, wellness and happiness. You can too!

So, here’s my Mother’s Day gift to you. You’re amazing, incredible, capable and have all the tools you need to make the changes to your lifestyle to make it work better. You don’t need to make excuses, justify or rationalize why you want a little time for you. You deserve to feel good-not because you’ve proven anything to anyone but simply because you exist!

Give yourself permission to take better care of yourself-not just on Mother’s Day but every day. It’s not indulgent, it’s crucial to your wellness and will not only benefit you but will benefit all within your care. Will you make that over due hair appointment? Take a walk? Buy some beautiful ripe berries to enjoy? It’s so simple but so important. I’d love to hear your ideas, let me know what you’re planning to do. Comment and share!

What Training for My First Half Marathon Has Taught Me…

So about a month ago, I was invited to Disney’s Magic Kingdom. It sounded incredible, complete VIP treatment from start to finish. As I continued to hear what these few days would include, it sounded like a dream come true (but then again, it’s Disney, right?) But there was a catch. I was invited to be a part of this exciting opportunity if…I ran the Disney Princess Half Marathon!

Up to this point, I’d never run more than 7 miles. How was I going to go from 7 miles to 13.1 miles in less than 6 weeks? As my head started spinning with ways to politely say “no thanks”, I did what I always do…I said yes before I could successfully talk myself out it!

I’ve come to learn that opportunities present themselves to us constantly and within those opportunities lies the capacity for us to learn, grow and become stronger, better and wiser. They also require us to burst right past our warm, safe and cushy comfort zones but I’ve also learned that right past our comfort zone is where all the great stuff is. So, trusting my instinct that this too will be an exciting adventure leading to who knows what, I made the decision to let the training begin.

First I ran a solid 7 miles, just to make sure I felt strong and secure with a solid place for my training to start. Sweaty, tired but confident, I challenged myself to run 8 miles and loaded up my ipod with songs to power me through.

Success! Ok, so I stopped a few times but I still did it.

Now I’m really starting to get into the whole running thing so I did what I always do when I want to learn something new-I went to the pros. I went to a specialty running store nearby and loaded up on new running shoes, some other fun running gear and even spoke to one of the salespeople who was a track coach. He generously mapped out a training schedule for me which seemed challenging but realistic. Armed and ready with my new gear I felt completely equipped to take my training to the next level.

I don’t know if it was the new running shoes or new mindset but I ran 10 miles on my next run. Woo hoo! I think I may have been doing a geeky victory dance because all 4 kids gave me that look like “wow, mom’s really lost it now.”

So now I’m thinking that 13.1 miles will be a breeze until…it wasn’t. I was having trouble getting past the 10 mile mark so I decided to hire the toughest, meanest and most demanding personal trainer/coach I could find…me. I mean, my clients said I was brutal at times so I hired myself based on their recommendation. :)

On the next run, I set a goal of running 11 miles and promised myself a manicure/pedicure as a reward for reaching my goal. Success! Off to the nail salon I went.

Now, new running shoes, new gear, new mindset, pretty hands and feet, it was time to run my first 13.1 miles. Success! I’m not saying it was easy, but I did it.

With a new record of 13.1 under my running belt, I’ve run 13.1 miles 3 more times. Every run has been different. Some where I thought I wouldn’t finish, others where I was completely distracted and one where I was completely “in the zone” and didn’t know how the time went by so fast! It was just after that run that I had a quick flash of what it must be like to run the New York City Marathon (26.2 miles). Knowing that runners are selected by lottery and aren’t immediately accepted just by registering, I registered and decided that if I’m randomly chosen in the lottery, then I’ll train for that too! (is that bad that I’m secretly hoping I’m not picked?!)

So here’s my latest challenge. Every run I’ve done has only been on a treadmill. I’m in New York and honestly, the thought of running in 30 degree temperature just isn’t that appealing. But it’s time to take it outside and see if I can run anywhere close to that amount on the streets. I’m sure once I do I’ll be celebrating again. If you can’t celebrate your accomplishments, what fun is that?!

Here’s what this training has taught me:

  • Opportunities are everywhere and you don’t know where they lead. Look for them and say “yes” before your fear can stop you.
  • Of course challenges are hard and that’s why the success is so sweet! Take them on and appreciate whatever results emerge as a result of them.
  • Get the support you need-get the right gear, get help from people who’ve been there, learn from everyone you can. People feel great when they can help you-don’t let your pride deprive them of giving you their gift!
  • While conditioning is important, mindset is crucial. Negative thoughts, feelings and distractions feel like you’ve added 100 pounds to your legs when you’re trying to run. Get your head in the right place and the body will follow.
  • Don’t be hard on yourself, judge yourself and don’t compare yourself to anyone else. Speak and treat yourself how you’d speak or treat your best friend-with compassion, love and kindness.
  • Celebrate any and all success! Whether you’re giving yourself a pat on the back, a gold star, a new song for your ipod or a mani/pedi, rewarding yourself for a job well done (or even done ok under the circumstances!) deserves a reward. It also motivates you to continue.
  • Have fun! Stop taking yourself so seriously. That stress alone can cause physical, mental and emotional wear and tear. Think, act and behave like a kid-why should kids have all the fun?!
  • Parents-your kids are watching you. The qualities for success in fitness are the same qualities for success in life. Patience, determination, perseverance, courage, commitment, vision and consistency among others. Your kids are learning so much by watching how you react and respond to challenges you take on and achieve so be the role model you’d want them to have. And, it’s ok to do a geeky victory dance. It gives your kids another reason to strive to be different…and much cooler than you!
Time to bundle up and go for that run outside. I have no idea how it will go but I do plan on thinking up a fun reward just for heading out there! I’d love to hear your thoughts, comment and share!

So You’ve Gained a Few Pounds, May as Well Gain More?

Hi Everyone,

How was your holiday? Hope it was filled with love, great times and special memories.

If you’re like most of us, while the holiday is filled with cheer, it’s also filled with food…a lot of it. Here’s where we often say “I’ll wait until the New Year to start eating better” or “I’ve blown it already, may as well just start fresh January 1st.” So, if I’m interpreting this correctly, it means that while you may have gained a pound or two, you may as well keep going and gain backall of the weight you’ve lost so you have a mountain, instead of a hill to climb once the New Year arrives. Does this make any sense?!

The reason I’m bringing it up now, and will be bringing it up again and again over the next few weeks is because it’s never to early or too late to get back on track. Healthy eating isn’t about “good or bad” “all or nothing” or being ”on or off” a diet at any given time. It’s about pulling in the reins when you feel you’ve been a little bit out of control, the pants are getting a little snug or you’re just starting to feel uncomfortable.

It’s perfectly ok to over indulge now and then. Food is meant to be savored and enjoyed, not something to fear or feel guilty about. The only difference between someone with a lot of weight to lose and someone who stays within their normal weight range is at what point they pull back, stop overdoing it and eat sensibly.

If you’ve reached that point now, stop and reconsider the usual “I’ll wait until the New Year” approach. While the New Year is all about new starts and fresh beginnings, it’s about changing what doesn’t work for something that works better. Think how great you’ll feel if when the New Year arrives you can celebrate knowing you’ve already put a great plan of healthy eating/behaving into action!

Enjoy and remember, the 2nd, 3rd and 10th bite/sip tastes the same as the 1st!

You’re invited!

Hi Everyone,

You’re invited to join me in a website launch celebration! I’m thrilled that my site www.TheMojoCoach.com is finally ready and I want to celebrate with you!

There are a few things I’d like to do. For one, because the holidays are here, I wanted to share this article with you to offer some guidance and support. It’s so frustrating to ring in the New Year with the same ol’ resolution to lose the excess weight. Here’s how to make your resolutions last.

How to Make Your New Year’s Resolution Last

What’s your New Year’s Resolution? Is it to lose weight or begin an exercise program? If you’re like most of us, a fit, healthy body is something you may want to work towards this year. In fact, it’s probably something you wanted to work towards last year as well as the year before. So here’s a question. Why is it that we start the New Year with the best of intentions just to fall short within the first few weeks?

One reason is due to the fact that almost ninety percent of what we do each day is the result of ritualistic habit. From the way we brush our teeth to which shoe we put on first is something we barely need to think about. We’ve done it a certain way for so long, it’s deeply ingrained within us and minimal effort is required to get the job done. To test this, just start your day by putting on the other shoe first and you’ll see how different it feels!

Well, eating and exercise habits work the same way. The way we eat, the reasons why we eat, the food choices we make are all habits which have been formed over time. Some of those habits may have lead to an unhealthy relationship with food where we’re eating to combat boredom, fatigue, anger, sadness or loneliness. For some of us, the portion sizes we take or the degree of fullness we leave the table with are habits we’ve formed as well. For others, the way we handle weekends, parties or holidays are the result of habit. Finally for others, the tastes we prefer are the result of habit as well. For example, we may have gotten used to the flavor of foods which are highly sweetened which leads us to crave and expect that type of flavor.

While many of these habits lead to weight gain and frustration, we stay with these behaviors because they’re so familiar. They may not serve us well but because we barely need to think about it the behavior continues. So, what can you do if you want to finally make a New Year’s Resolution that lasts?

The first plan of action is taking a look at your eating behaviors. Figure out how the weight gain happened in the first place. Do you eat emotionally, mindlessly or have binge type behavior? Are your food choices or portions causing you a problem? Are you having trouble because of a lack of preplanning or having healthy foods available to you?

The more you understand why you do what you do, the better position you’re in to change what doesn’t work. Once you’ve identified where the problem is, the next step is to make one simple gradual change. Anything drastic is always temporary so it’s best to start small. One change headed in the right direction will make a much greater impact than a complete overhaul which lasts only a short period of time. For example, if portion control is a problem, making the decision to leave over three bites every time you eat dinner may not seem so difficult. Believe it or not, those three bites each night over time add up and you will slowly replace your larger portion with a portion that’s more moderate. This type of change is likely to last because it’s a minor change that doesn’t require too much effort and is easy to incorporate into your eating plan.

Once you’ve gotten used to eating a smaller portion for dinner, you are more likely to attempt a new change such as replacing an unhealthy snack with a healthier one. You see that you were able to gain control over your portions at dinner, you feel good about the change and your ability to achieve a mini goal and the confidence you’ve gained encourages you to continue making another tweak in your eating habits. Also, the first habit is easily reinforced while the new habit is implemented.

This type of behavior leads to true, lasting weight loss because you’re slowly replacing old destructive habits with new healthy habits. No change is so drastic that it becomes too difficult to continue so there’s no reason to revert back to your old ways. Before you know it, you have a series of new healthy habits in place which have firmly replaced the old ones.

This New Year, the only resolution you need to make is to stop making the same frustrating resolutions that you’ve made in the past. This year, commit to making new healthy habits slowly and steadily.

The second thing I wanted to do was give you a gift. Why? First of all, I’m so grateful and appreciative for all of your support.  The next reason is because gifts just make celebrations more fun. Lastly, you’re probably getting gifts (or you’ll soon be getting gifts) for everyone else and I wanted to make sure you got something too. So, fom now until December 31st,  if you’ve signed up for my my ezine, free report and weekly tips and you’d like to receive a gift from me (a free CD!)  just send an email with your address to Debi@TheMojoCoach.com and I’ll get it out to you soon.

The last thing I wanted to do is make sure you knew that my greatest goal is for you to recognize how incredible, capable and complete you are. The more I know you, the better I can help you recognize that and help you achieve your health/weight loss/fitness/wellness goals so browse around the site www.TheMojoCoach.com and see which articles, products or services may be a good fit for you. Remember, any action is a step in the right direction so make sure to take some action and find what you need. If you’re looking for more information about nutrition, weight loss, fitness, stress control, emotional health, relationships or spirituality that you don’t find, let me know and I’ll do my best to direct you to where you may be able to find your answers.

Thanks so much for being such an important part of this celebration. I mean, celebrations aren’t any fun if there’s no one to celebrate with, right?

Wishing you all the best!
