In the blink of an eye…

We’ve all heard it and it’s so true. Time flies and if we’re busy being overwhelmed, overextended and taking on more that is best for us we’ll miss so much of the precious gift we have called the “present.” When do we notice that time is flying? When we’re blessed to be a part of different milestones with the ones we love.

Seems like just yesterday I was a new mom with 4 little ones and in reality, just yesterday I watched 2 out of my 4 kids graduating from elementary and middle schools.

Sure these milestones are huge for your kids but they’re also big for us as moms. As we finish another chapter in the exciting book of our children’s lives, it’s milestones like these that give moms the perfect opportunity to reflect and take pride in a job well done.

What are YOU celebrating? I’d love to know, comment and share!

How to Stay Active While at a Desk All Day

Recently, I was asked “what’s the best way to avoid gaining weight when you’re at a desk all day?” Here are a few ideas:

*The first thing I’d recommend you do is not sit all day! Stand up when you’re on the phone, take a short walking break every half hour, etc.

*Also, don’t send emails to anyone in the office. Walk your message over for extra activity.

*Take the stairs instead of the elevator whenever possible

*Park further away and walk the distance instead of finding the closest spot

*You can do lunges, squats and even desk pushups at your desk.

*Bring your sneakers to the office and walk or run the stairs during your lunch break. If possible, find like minded coworkers to motivate and join you.

*Watch what you’re eating. Every morsel counts when you’re not as active as you need to be. Be careful about mindlessly grabbing something as you pass by someone’s desk or what you keep stashed in yours

*Keep your gym bag packed and in the car so you get to the gym before you get home. If guilt is a problem, erase it by telling yourself that you have more to give if you’re happy and feeling fit.

*If possible, work out before you leave in the morning. You have more control of your time and less commitments in the morning which often throw off a workout later in the day.

*Here’s one last one. It’s a little unconventional but I can assure you…it’s effective. How do I know? Because this is the stepper I’m using while writing this post!

Your Friends and…Your Health?

Take a look at your friends and I’ll tell you how you feel. It may sound crazy but the people we spend our time with give an inside view as to how we feel emotionally, mentally and even physically. For example, spend your time with negative, pessimistic and unhappy people and you’ll feel drained, spent and depleted. Spend your time with optimistic, happy, positive people and you’ll feel rejuvenated and refreshed. Not only that but chances are, the positive feelings you have from spending time with those people will carry over and impact both the people you speak with and the things you do long after a positive exchange is through.

If that weren’t reason enough to spend time with a more pleasant bunch, consider this. Rewarding and enriching relationships are good for your health! These types of relationships actually support and strengthen your immune system which protects your body from breakdown and invasion. Negative relationships have been found to suppress and compromise your immune system, offering less protection and support against illness, even disease.

So with this in mind, steer clear of those “energy vampires” and go have a laugh with some fun friends! Your body and mind will benefit from it.

Why You DON’T Want to Conserve Energy

Do you conserve energy? I’m not talking about shutting off the lights or using less heat. I’m talking about conserving your own energy by preventing your body from burning the calories you take in.

You see, if you’re an “energy conservationist” you’re not utilizing one of the easiest ways to help you become lean and fit.

For example, think about a naturally thin and fit person who has some free time versus, someone less lean and fit who has a few free hours. You may very well see the thin person gardening, cleaning or doing an activity which requires movement while you may see the less lean and fit person watching TV, surfing the net or doing something more sedentary vs. more active. If you watch closely, you may very likely see more energy, quicker movements and more “pep in the step” of the leaner/fitter person vs. the less lean/fit. How does this show itself in weight and health?

The more you move your body, the more you teach your body that the calories you take in are to be used for fuel, not storage. Not only does this lead to a leaner body, but it also leads to greater energy and vitality.

Think of how you can “fidget” throughout the day or ways to move versus conserve energy. Can you take the stairs instead of the elevator? Look for a parking spot further from the store instead of closer? Can you pace while on the phone instead of sitting in your chair? Believe it or not, these small additions add up over time.

Remember, it’s great to conserve energy…just not your own.

How can you increase your daily movement and become LESS of an “energy conservationist?” I’d love to know, comment and share!

Yes and No: The Words That Can Make Us…Or Break Us

I’ve discovered that for many people, “yes” and “no” are two of the most misused words we use today. We say “yes” to things which zap our time, energy and strength and “no” to the things that could give us joy, pleasure and fulfillment.

For example, maybe you already have a hectic, chaotic schedule. You feel stressed, overwhelmed and overcommitted. Someone asks you for a favor and what do you say…”yes!” On the other hand, when you have an opportunity to try something exciting, potentially rewarding and enriching, because you’re overcommitted or have convinced yourself you’re (not ready, not smart enough, too old, too heavy, etc.), what do you say…”no!”

Getting our “yeses” and “nos” straight may take some work but it’s worth it in order to stay true to our values and work towards a healthy balanced lifestyle. Sure it may be difficult to say no but if it means extra time with your family, time to pursue an interest or just catch up on some sleep isn’t it worth it?

Are you getting the right words out at the right time? I’d love to know, comment and share!

What Do You Do to Show Yourself Some Self Care?

What do you do to show yourself some self care?

Recently, a hair care company conducted a study involving 3000 women. While a whopping 84% admitted they let their appearance slide, over 94% revealed that they feel better when they take measures towards their own self care. So, if we feel better when we take the time to care for ourselves, why don’t we make it a priority?

For many people, they just don’t know where to start.

I always recommend starting small and make a few minor changes which may encourage you to make a few more alterations in the right direction. Here are a few ideas which many of my clients have tried. Choose any one which feels right and motivates you to continue on your wellness journey.

-Clean out your closet-anything with rips/holes/stains either fix or toss

-Get a long overdue manicure, pedicure, haircut or coloring

-Take a long bath, go for a walk, call a friend, clean out a drawer, donate gently used toys/clothes

-Exercise

-Read a book, take a walk in nature, listen to soothing music, watch a funny movie

-Donate your time to an organization you resonate with

-Shop at your local farmers market, try a new vegetable, buy organic produce or start a vegetarian night

-Schedule a “date night” with your partner

Believe it or not, these minor changes encourage you to take better care of yourself because they make you feel better. Then you may want to eat better, exercise, find healthier outlets for stress control, etc.

Have any ideas I didn’t mention? I’d love to hear them, comment and share!
